Get Your Nintendo DS Games Free With The R4 DS Revolution Flash Card
The R4 DS Revolution was released over 3 years ago as a means for people to play homebrew / open source games and apps on their Nintendo DS Consoles. Since its release there have been numerous improvements and enhancements to the R4 DS Revolution both in design as well as in the firmware software that runs the R4 DS.
Prior to the debut of the R4 DS Revolution there were simply no other low cost slot 1 NDS Flash cards on the market. The only way one could play their Nintendo DS homebrew games or applications was by hacking a Gameboy Advance flash card like the SuperCard SD and adding to it a PASSKEY in order for the Nintendo DS to recognize it as a flash card that was compatible.
This was fine, except that the cartridge would always stick out of your Nintendo DS and more than that, you had to convert each and every single file before being able to load the game or app onto your Nintendo DS console. This had everything to do with the fact that these cards were originally made to be used on the GameBoy Advance and Gameboy Advance SP and not on the Nintendo DS. A limitation of the firmware itself you could say, as the card tried to load an NDS game, when it was originally designed to load only GBA Games.
The R4 Card did away with these limitations and annoyances. Perhaps that is why the Revolution was put into the name, because it was the first card of its kind that actually looked and felt like a regular Nintendo DS card. And definitely the first card that was able to make use of very inexpensive Micro SD Card flash media for storing and loading your games, something that had just not been done before.
But look and feel are not all that the R4 DS Revolution has put into play. It made loading your open source / homebrew games quick and easy. You have to do nothing more than just a quick copy and paste for the files to be on your card. No conversion was required, and games started being released quicker because only one version had to be created for the R4 DS type card.
It was the R4 DS that truly brought real homebrew to the Nintendo DS system. And thank goodness it did. As the DSi came out, the slot 2, or GBA card slot on the DSi went away. You were no longer able to use GBA flash cards like the supercard SD in your Nintendo DS console to play your homebrew game and applications. Without a card like the R4 DS Revolution, you would not be playing your homebrew games today.... and that would mean a lot of missed, great games and apps, and a darn shame.
